The Oxford Dictionary defines confidence as being a state of certainty about a fact or event. In common-day terminology, it is simply the psychological state of being sure of something in general. It can also be understood as a sense of assurance or certainty about one’s abilities or qualities. On the other hand, competence is one’s available skill to complete a task.

Bridging the gap from confidence to competence encapsulates the journey from having self-assuredness or belief in one’s abilities to actually acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in a particular field or task. This concept is relevant in various aspects of life, including education, career development, personal growth, and skill acquisition.

It would be best if you were self-aware.  Start by assessing your current competence level in the area you want to improve. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. Recognize that confidence without competence can lead to overconfidence, hindering your progress.

Identify the gap between your knowledge and your skills. Once you have identified them seek out opportunities to fill them. Competence is often built through practice and consistent effort. Dedicate time regularly to work on the specific skills or knowledge areas you need to develop. The more you practice, the more confident and competent you’ll become.

Bear in mind that bridging the gap from confidence to competence is not a linear process. It takes time, effort, and persistence. However, with a clear plan and a commitment to learning and growth, you can steadily build the competence to match your confidence in any area of life.
